The Nassau County Sheriff’s Department Emerald Society was established in 1990 by a dedicated group of correction officers and deputy sheriffs who sought to celebrate their shared Irish heritage while strengthening the bonds of fraternity within the Department. One year later, on June 25, 1991, the Society was formally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in the State of New York, laying the foundation for what has become a lasting and respected institution within the Sheriff’s Department community.

The creation of the Society reflected a long-standing tradition within law enforcement. For generations, Irish-Americans have played a vital role in public service across New York and throughout the United States. Organizations such as the NYPD Emerald Society and the Nassau County Police Emerald Society helped establish a model of camaraderie, cultural pride, and charitable service. Inspired by this legacy, the founding members of the Sheriff’s Emerald Society created an organization that would represent the unique identity and experiences of those serving within the Sheriff’s Department.

From its earliest days, the Society has been committed to fostering fellowship among its members while honoring the traditions of Irish heritage. What began as a small group of like-minded individuals quickly grew into a strong and enduring brotherhood, bringing together active and retired members of the Department in a spirit of unity and mutual support.

Throughout its history, the Society has remained dedicated to charitable work and community involvement. Through fundraising events, social gatherings, and outreach efforts, the organization has supported a variety of charitable causes and scholarship initiatives. Annual traditions, including holiday gatherings and member events, have strengthened the sense of family that defines the Society.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Department Emerald Society has also proudly participated in Irish cultural celebrations, most notably the St. Patrick’s Day parade tradition. Marching alongside fellow Emerald Societies and public service organizations, the Society continues to honor the heritage and contributions of Irish-Americans in law enforcement.

For over three decades, the Society has served as a source of pride within the Sheriff’s Department—bringing members together not only to celebrate their heritage, but also to support one another through the challenges and responsibilities of their profession.

Today, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department Emerald Society remains committed to the principles upon which it was founded: fraternity, charity, and heritage. As it looks to the future, the Society continues to build upon its proud history while preserving the traditions that have defined it since its inception.
